Instagram Trial Reels: Test Content on Non-Followers Before It Hits Your Grid

Instagram's new Trial Reels, announced on 10 December 2024, let professional accounts show a reel to non-followers first. Here's how brands can use it to test ideas without risking their feed.

Instagram Trial Reels: Test Content on Non-Followers Before It Hits Your Grid

In short:

  • Trial Reels are shown to people who don’t follow you first, not to your followers.
  • After 24 hours you can see views, likes, comments and shares, then decide whether to share the reel with your followers.
  • It’s a low-risk way for brands to test hooks, formats and new content ideas.

On 10 December 2024, Instagram introduced Trial Reels for professional accounts. A trial reel is shown to non-followers only. It doesn’t appear on your main grid or Reels tab, so your followers don’t see experiments that don’t work.

Meta described it as a way for creators to try new things without worrying about how their followers will react. Early access started with some accounts, so you may not see it yet.

How it works

  1. Create a reel as normal and turn on the “Trial” option before sharing.
  2. Instagram shows it to people who don’t follow you.
  3. After about 24 hours, check the reel’s views, likes, comments and shares.
  4. Share it with your followers with one tap if it performed well, or set it to share automatically if it does well.

How brands should use it

  • Test hooks. Post the same video with two different first 3 seconds and see which gets more views and shares.
  • Try new formats like talking-head videos, behind-the-scenes or product demos, without changing your grid’s look.
  • Find ad creative. A trial reel that does well with non-followers is a strong candidate to run as a paid ad, because it already worked with cold audiences.
  • Test Roman Urdu vs English captions and voice-overs for the same idea.

What to watch

  • Shares and saves matter more than likes. They signal content people find useful or want to show others.
  • Watch time. If most people drop off in the first two seconds, the hook needs work.
  • Comments with questions. These show buying interest and are great ideas for your next reel.

Our take

Most brands post content and hope. Trial Reels turn Instagram into a testing tool. Use it every week, and feed the winners into your ads.
