Slow Internet in Pakistan: How to Protect Your Leads and Sales

Internet speeds across Pakistan dropped sharply in August 2024, hitting WhatsApp media, ads and websites. Here's how businesses can keep leads and orders coming while connectivity is unreliable.

Slow Internet in Pakistan: How to Protect Your Leads and Sales

In short:

  • In August 2024, internet speeds in Pakistan fell sharply. Industry bodies reported drops of 30–40%, and WhatsApp voice notes and media were badly affected.
  • P@SHA, the software industry association, warned losses could reach $300 million. The PTA blamed a fault in the SMW-4 undersea cable and expected repairs by early October.
  • Businesses can’t fix the network, but they can make their websites lighter, their forms simpler and their follow-up faster.

For most of August 2024, Pakistani businesses have been working with internet that feels years older. Pages load slowly, WhatsApp images and voice notes take minutes to arrive, and VPNs barely work. The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan reported speeds falling by 30–40%. The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) estimated the disruption could cost the economy up to $300 million and blamed the rushed rollout of a national firewall. Authorities denied that and pointed to a faulty undersea cable, among other reasons.

Whatever the cause, the effect on marketing is real: more people abandon slow pages, ad clicks don’t turn into visits, and leads go cold while messages fail to send.

Where you’re losing money right now

  • Ad clicks that never load. You pay for the click, but if the landing page takes 10 seconds, many people leave before seeing it.
  • Heavy WhatsApp catalogs and voice notes. Customers can’t open them, so they stop replying.
  • Long forms. Every extra field and every slow page is another chance to drop off.
  • Slow follow-up. If your team is also struggling to connect, leads wait longer for a reply.

What to do this week

  1. Make landing pages lighter. Compress images, remove sliders and autoplay videos, and cut third-party scripts you don’t need. Test your page on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.
  2. Use instant forms where possible. Meta lead forms load inside Facebook and Instagram, so they don’t depend on your site loading quickly.
  3. Reply with text, not media. Send prices and details as short text messages first. Send images only when the customer asks.
  4. Add a phone call option. A “Call now” button works even when data is slow.
  5. Check your ad results by hour. If conversion rates collapse at certain times, shift budget away from those hours.
  6. Don’t change everything based on bad data. Tracking pixels may also fail to load, so platform numbers could look worse than reality. Compare with your actual orders and leads before cutting campaigns.

Longer term

This won’t be the last disruption. Sites built light, with clear text, small images and few scripts, keep selling when connectivity drops. If your website struggles on a slow connection, now is the time to fix it, because your competitors’ sites are struggling too.
