Google’s AI Overviews Are Here: What It Means for Your Search Traffic

At Google I/O on 14 May 2024, Google started rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US, with more countries to follow. Here's how AI answers at the top of search will change SEO.

Google’s AI Overviews Are Here: What It Means for Your Search Traffic

In short:

  • On 14 May 2024 Google began rolling out AI Overviews, AI-written answers shown above the normal results, to all US users.
  • Google says more countries are coming. Pakistani sites with international audiences will feel it first.
  • Expect fewer clicks on simple informational searches. Content with original expertise, data and experience becomes more valuable, not less.

At its I/O developer conference on 14 May 2024, Google announced that AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries it had been testing in Search Labs as the “Search Generative Experience”, would roll out to everyone in the United States that week, with other countries to follow. Google said it expects the feature to reach over a billion people by the end of the year.

What AI Overviews are

For some searches, Google now shows a short AI-written answer at the top of the page, with links to the sources it used. The normal “10 blue links” are still there, but further down. AI Overviews appear mostly for questions and complex searches, less for simple brand or shopping searches.

What it means for your traffic

  • Simple questions will get fewer clicks. If someone searches “what is SPF in sunscreen” and gets a good answer at the top, many won’t click any result.
  • Being cited matters. The links inside an AI Overview get attention. Your goal shifts from just ranking to also being one of the sources Google chooses to cite.
  • Buying searches are less affected for now. Searches like “buy sunscreen online Lahore” still show shopping results and stores.

How to prepare

  1. Answer questions clearly. Put a direct, accurate answer near the top of your page, then go deeper. AI systems pull from content that is easy to understand.
  2. Add what AI can’t invent. Your own prices, test results, photos, customer questions, local knowledge and expert opinion. Generic content is easy to summarise and replace.
  3. Use structured data. Product, FAQ, review and organisation schema help Google understand your pages.
  4. Build your brand. When people search for your name, AI Overviews don’t take the click. Brand demand, built through social, PR and ads, is protection.
  5. Track by page type. In Search Console, watch informational blog pages separately from product and service pages so you know where any drop comes from.

Our take

Search is not dying. It’s changing what earns a click. The sites that will lose are the ones that rewrote other people’s content. The ones that gain will be the sources AI tools quote: specific, trustworthy, first-hand. That has always been good SEO. Now it’s the only kind that works.
