ChatGPT Atlas and AI Agents: Is Your Website Ready for Machines That Browse?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser with ChatGPT built in, on 21 October 2025. Its agent mode can browse sites and complete tasks. Here's how to build websites that work for both people and AI agents.

ChatGPT Atlas and AI Agents: Is Your Website Ready for Machines That Browse?

In short:

  • ChatGPT Atlas is a Chromium-based browser with ChatGPT built in, launched for macOS on 21 October 2025.
  • Its agent mode (preview, paid plans) can navigate websites to research, fill carts and complete multi-step tasks, with user permission.
  • Sites that are clear, fast and accessible to screen readers are also easiest for AI agents to use.

On 21 October 2025, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser built around ChatGPT. It’s available on macOS first, with Windows and mobile versions to come. Atlas can summarise pages, remember context (if users turn browser memories on) and, in agent mode, carry out tasks on websites such as researching products or building a shopping cart. OpenAI says the agent asks for confirmation before sensitive actions.

Why this matters for your website

For years, websites were built for two audiences: people and search engine crawlers. Now there’s a third: AI agents acting for a person. If an agent can’t understand your menu, find your prices or use your booking form, it will move on to a competitor’s site that it can use.

How to make your site agent-friendly

  1. Use real HTML elements. Proper buttons, links, form labels and headings. Clickable divs and image-only buttons confuse both screen readers and AI agents.
  2. Put key information in text. Prices, sizes, delivery areas and opening hours should be text on the page, not only inside images or videos.
  3. Keep forms simple and label every field clearly.
  4. Avoid blocking pop-ups that cover content on first load.
  5. Use structured data for products, local business details, FAQs and events.
  6. Keep pages fast. Agents, like people, give up on slow pages.

The good news

Everything on this list also improves accessibility, SEO and conversion rate for human visitors. Building for AI agents is mostly just building websites properly.
