Gmail and Yahoo’s New Sender Rules: Is Your Email Still Reaching the Inbox?

Since February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require bulk senders to authenticate, offer one-click unsubscribe and keep spam complaints low. Here's what Pakistani brands need to fix before June.

Gmail and Yahoo’s New Sender Rules: Is Your Email Still Reaching the Inbox?

In short:

  • Since February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo have new rules for anyone sending more than 5,000 emails a day to their users.
  • You need SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up, a spam complaint rate below 0.3%, and a one-click unsubscribe.
  • Enforcement of one-click unsubscribe starts in June 2024. If you haven’t fixed this yet, do it now.

If your store sends a weekly newsletter, abandoned cart emails or order updates, a large share of your list probably uses Gmail. For years, getting into the inbox was mostly about not looking like spam. That changed in February 2024, when Google and Yahoo started enforcing stricter requirements for bulk senders.

Many Pakistani brands we audit still send from a free address or an email tool that was set up years ago and never authenticated. Those emails are now the first to land in spam, or not arrive at all.

What changed

Both providers published sender guidelines that apply to anyone sending close to 5,000 or more messages a day to their users. The three core requirements are:

  1. Authenticate your domain. Set up SPF and DKIM for the domain you send from, and publish a DMARC record. Your “From” address should be on your own domain, not a Gmail address.
  2. Keep spam complaints low. Google asks senders to stay below a 0.3% spam rate, as reported in Google Postmaster Tools. In practice, aim for under 0.1%.
  3. Make unsubscribing easy. Marketing emails must support one-click unsubscribe (the list-unsubscribe header defined in RFC 8058), and you must process unsubscribes within two days.

Both Google and Yahoo said they would not enforce the one-click unsubscribe requirement until June 2024, as long as you already have a clear, working unsubscribe link in the footer. That grace period is almost over.

Why this matters for Pakistani brands

Email is one of the cheapest sales channels a store has. A good abandoned-cart flow can recover sales every day without a rupee of extra ad spend. But if Gmail starts filtering your emails, that channel quietly dies. Your email tool will still say “sent”, so you might not notice for weeks.

We see three common problems:

  • Sending from a free address like yourbrand@gmail.com through a newsletter tool. Gmail cannot authenticate that, so it treats the mail with suspicion.
  • Old lists full of inactive or bought contacts. These drive spam complaints and bounces up fast.
  • Missing DMARC. Many domains have SPF but no DKIM or DMARC at all.

Your checklist

  1. Send from your own domain, for example hello@yourbrand.pk.
  2. Add SPF and DKIM using the DNS records your email platform (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Brevo and others) gives you.
  3. Publish a DMARC record. Start with p=none so you can monitor reports, then tighten it later.
  4. Turn on one-click unsubscribe in your platform. Most major tools add the header automatically once your domain is authenticated.
  5. Set up Google Postmaster Tools to see your spam rate and domain reputation.
  6. Clean your list. Suppress contacts who haven’t opened or clicked in 6–12 months, and never upload bought lists.

What we recommend

Treat this as an opportunity. Authenticated senders with engaged lists will have an easier time reaching the inbox than ever, because the senders cutting corners are being filtered out. If you’re not sure your setup is right, we can check your domain records and deliverability in a short audit.
